Postgraduate Council

The post graduate council is constituted as per Section 252 of Orissa Universities First Statutes, 1990 to oversee the smooth functioning of the Post-Graduate (PG) departments of the university and take decisions on important academic matters. Currently, Professor Satyabrata Mishra (Dept. of Economics) is the Chairman of the Post Graduate Council.

Composition and Role of the PG Council:

  • All the Heads/Coordinators of the PG Departments of the University are members of the Post-Graduate Council in their ex-officio
  • The Vice-Chancellor appoints the Chairperson of the P.G. Council from amongst the professors of the University on seniority-cum-rotation basis for a period of two academic
  • The Chairperson presides over the meeting of the Post-Graduate Council, and in his/her absence, the senior most Head of the Post-Graduate Department present in the meeting, shall preside over.
  • The PostGraduate Council may discharge duties in relation to matters concerning:
  1. Determination of general policy in regard to the Post-Graduate studies and
  2. Admission into various programmes as per guidelines of Students Academic Management System (SAMS)
  3. Welfare of students
  4. Maintenance of discipline
  5. Publication of information brochure, university magazines, annual academic calendar and list of holidays for teaching departments
  6. Admission of students into hostels
  7. Academic and Industry collaboration
  8. Enforcement of the guidelines of the University Grants Commission issued from time to time on the subject of work-ethics and responsibility of teachers h)The Post-Graduate Council may   appoint Committees like Admission Committee, Board of residence, Board of Examination, Grievance Redressal, Anti-Ragging and Discipline Committee for each academic year

Important Decisions taken by the P.G. Council during the Academic Session 2023–24

Following its formation on 23 August 2023, the Post-Graduate council has met on several occasions to prepare the roadmap for the current and upcoming academic sessions. Some of the important decisions concerning the academic life of the university are outlined below:

  • My Department, My Responsibility initiative was launched by the PG Council to ensure cleanliness in each department
  • It has been resolved to install Idea Box and Suggestion Box in each department to elicit innovative ideas from young students, keeping in view the Vision 2047 initiative of government of India
  • Resolution for organising extra-mural lecture series, and national and international conferences has been passed by the council
  • An SOP (standard operating procedure) for organising conferences have also been put in place
  • Contingency funds have been earmarked for each department
  • Seminar Fund Account for each P.G. department has been opened and it has been decided to collect a sum of Rs 1000 from each student per annum, out of which 60% is to be defrayed towards organising department seminar and 40% is to be utilised for procuring books for department seminar library
  • Resolutions regarding examination regulations and remuneration rates for UG and PG examinations have been passed
  • Regulations for Residence Committee have been framed and the committee has been reconstituted keeping in view the wellbeing of the hostel boarders
  • The Council has decided to launch a project titled “Effects of Smartphone Ban on Students Outcome” in collaboration with three foreign universities. This project, which is being sponsored by Experiment Protocols, shall be applicable for 3 even semesters for the academic session 2023–24, and shall be implemented during the period January––June
